The Waitaki Multicultural Council recently came together for a very special occasion, a combined celebration of Matariki and National Volunteer Week. It was an evening dedicated to honouring the amazing people who give their time, kindness, and aroha to uplift our community.
This year’s Volunteer Week theme, Whiria te tangata – weaving the people together, couldn’t be more fitting. What better way to embrace this idea than by sharing kai, kōrero, and heartfelt gratitude with those who make a difference every day? Our “Thank You” gathering was a chance to reflect on the power of connection and the strength of community.
In the spirit of Matariki, a season of reflection, renewal, and new beginnings, we introduced a beautiful tradition: the Wishing Jar, inspired by Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the wishing star. Guests were invited to write down a hope, dream, or intention for the year ahead, creating a collective vision for a brighter future.
To all our volunteers: thank you for your generous hearts and tireless mahi. Your contributions weave the fabric of our community, and we are deeply grateful for everything you do.
